Born from fire. Rooted in Southeast Asia.

meimei is a Woodfired Modern Asian restaurant in Canggu, Bali - where the diverse flavours, ingredients, and traditions of Southeast Asia are explored through live-fire cooking, one - only technique, and a deep respect for provenance.
Intro

Fire is our foundation. Southeast Asia is our inspiration. Every dish is shaped by smoke, spice, seasonality, and a commitment to the people and places behind every ingredient.

meimei was born from a simple but uncommon conviction: that Southeast Asian food, at its finest, belongs at the centre of a serious dining experience — not as a supporting act to European cuisine, not as 'street food elevated', but as a fully realised culinary tradition with its own depth, technique, and complexity.

We cook over wood and charcoal. We ferment, we cure, we reduce. We draw from Balinese, Batak, Javanese, and Minangkabau traditions — and we do so with the discipline of a kitchen that treats every technique with respect. The result is food that tastes like it comes from somewhere specific, cooked by people who care exactly where it came from.

We are not a fusion restaurant. We do not blend for the sake of novelty. What you find on the plate at Meimei is the product of genuine study, genuine sourcing, and a kitchen culture that measures success by how precisely a dish expresses its origin.

妹妹 (mèiméi). In Mandarin Chinese: little sister. A term of endearment — intimate, familiar, warm. We chose this name because it captures something essential about how we want you to feel here. Not impressed. Not intimidated. At home.

Our Story

It started with a conversation about fire

meimei began as a conversation between four people who had all, separately, spent years eating across Southeast Asia and wondering why what they found there — the complexity, the heat, the technique — was never really present in the restaurants they admired elsewhere in the world.

Dewa, Windu, Yudha, and Aris met in Bali. They shared a belief that the island's growing food scene had the audience and the appetite for something genuinely serious — a restaurant that didn't trade on Bali's laid-back reputation but built on top of it.

Years later, the menu has grown and the team has expanded, but the founding principle hasn't changed: the best food in this region has always come from fire, from spice, and from the kind of patience that most kitchens don't have.

What we believe

Three principles. All of them earned.

1

The Fire Doctrine

Once you light a fire, you are committed. Every dish at meimei passes through flame — wood, charcoal, or lava rock. There are no shortcuts in a live-fire kitchen, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

2

Ingredient Integrity

We source from small farms across Indonesia, working directly with producers who share our respect for seasonality and traditional methods. The quality of what arrives in the kitchen determines everything else.

3

Contrast & Cohesion

Our menu holds a permanent tension: the restraint of Nordic technique against the boldness of Southeast Asian spice. The contrast is deliberate. The cohesion is the skill of making it feel inevitable.

The Kitchen

Where smoke, spice, and seasonality meet

At the heart of meimei is a custom charcoal grill, wood-fire oven, and a kitchen driven by curiosity.

Our cooking draws on the flavours, ingredients, and traditions of Southeast Asia, interpreted through fermentation, fire, and modern technique.

Every sambal, sauce, cure, and ferment is made in-house. Every dish is shaped by seasonality, provenance, and a commitment to constant refinement.
The space

A fire lit.
An open kitchen.
A table waiting for you.

meimei is designed around the rhythm of a great meal. The circular cocktail bar welcomes guests in, while the open kitchen brings the energy of the fire to the centre of the room.

Designed with atmosphere in mind, the space combines natural materials, local craftsmanship, and contemporary design. Recycled clay plaster, teak, stone, handcrafted ceramics, and warm lighting create an place that feels grounded, relaxed, and distinctly Balinese.

We’re waiting for you
